![]() ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ was likely still hot at the time, but it needs to be said that Coolio would often have trouble keeping up with a beat. Coolio’s involvement doesn’t end there, as he unrhythmically rattles his way through ‘The Winner’. It’s also one of the cuts of the soundtrack that has aged the best, pretty much because Busta Rhymes’ cutting edge accent raps haven’t aged, nor has Method Man’s crippling delivery, who really sounds as if he wants to be there, no lie. Rap isn’t at the forefront of the soundtrack, but Space Jam’s hip hop corner is its most ‘90s quantum, as emphasised by posse cut ‘Hit ‘Em High (The Monstars’ Anthem’)’ which involves B-Real, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, LL Cool J and Method Man – like, holy shit, right? The rap itself is pretty precious cheesy but with cheesy intent, so who could complain? Pity Mel Blanc had already died at this point I’d love to hear him spit a few bars. Kelly and Changing Faces on ‘All of My days’, which isn’t quite as notable – where Warner were concerned, Hov saved all his best bars for Bugs. However, the film’s soundtrack definitely does.Īs popular as hip hop may be today, it was just as much a giant at the time of the original’s release, and while Porky Pig proved that in the sequel, the original film’s soundtrack actually included a rap track courtesy of Bugs Bunny, entitled ‘Buggin’, written by Jay-Z, who also collaborates with R. This is a ‘90s kid movie, but despite his Airness being involved in the crossover, Looney Tunes isn’t necessarily an enterprise that screams ‘90s. Michael Jordan, one of the biggest sporting icons in the world leading up to the film’s release, crosses over with Looney Tunes characters in a live action/animation hybrid. The assumption I mentioned, that the sequel was simply written for today’s children, even featuring Porky Pig taking part in a rap battle, was an easy dissection, until I thought for a moment regarding just how ‘90s the original ‘Space Jam’ was/is. ![]() Like many children of the ‘90s, I am a fan of the original, though I’m also aware of its many, cheesy flaws. But taste doesn’t necessarily play a part when the movie had essentially been used as a massive marketing ploy for the Warner library, with all kinds of intellectual properties making appearances in the film, including Rick and Morty, which was unexpected. I have to acknowledge the assumption that the ‘Space Jam’ sequel simply wasn’t written with me in mind, what with the modernised take on humour and all. I watched ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ recently, and my conclusion has been an easy one I didn’t like it. I’m going to start this review with a review.
